About us

Fletch and Watty are the heart and sole of Active Education! Amassing over 30 years’ experience working within SEMH provisions they have developed exceptional behavioural management skills and have an ability to build strong therapeutic relationships with their students. They believe that sport is the “hook” to engagement which enables them to offer sport-based mentoring and successfully achieve positive outcomes for young people within the Sheffield community.

Our Mission

Active Education are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment, where young people feel valued and are motivated to achieve to the best of their ability, using an ‘active education’ approach. With a holistic view, we aim to build fitness, social skills and emotional resilience, while promoting our students to think critically about their futures, take responsibility, build independence, and establish an interest in their own education.

Our Approach

The foundation of our approach is based on the the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ campaign, which demonstrates the need for a healthy and happy lifestyle to enable academic prosper. We base our educating on the ‘child 1st’ principle, which sees the child as an individual first and their behaviour second, ensuring children are given opportunity to flourish without judgement or criticism.

We understand the profound effect trauma has on young people, their ability to learn and the impact exclusion has on their emotional wellbeing, as such using trauma informed practice, we aim to target the physical and psychological manifestations of trauma through active learning. We use the ‘theory of change’ to plan appropriate sport intervention to suit the needs of the young person to instil enthusiasm for physical exercise. We strive to achieve positive outcomes for our students which includes; improved sleep disturbances, increased mental and physical health, confidence, social skills and enhanced peer relationships.

Referrals

Students from all backgrounds are welcomed to refer for our services including:

+ At risk of exclusion

+ Excluded from school

+ Unable to attend school for medical reasons

+ Unable to attend school for mental health reasons

+ Special Education Needs (SEN)

+ Young people in the public care system

+ Young offenders

+ New arrivals, refugees and asylum seeker

Active Education are a family of experienced, resolute and passionate members who foster respect, kindness and diversity. With a variety of skills from leading sports qualifications, running residentials, day trips and events to building collaborations with private clubs and sports partnerships in and around Sheffield they will try their hand to almost anything.

Fletch is a qualified PE teacher who has worked wonders in the various special education settings he has been part of. Fletch uses sport and exercise to engage students and teach them important life skills, such as, teamwork, communication and decision making.

Fletch has been in and around boxing gyms since his early teens and understands first-hand how these environments help build an individual’s confidence and resilience. Regardless of the career path students choose to take, these skills are transferable and are the key to success.

Watty has over 30 years’ experience in the SEMH education sector, leading outdoor education sessions and managing the Duke of Edinburgh Award. His knowledge of the local Peak District is unmatched, and he excels in how he uses the great outdoors to vastly improve the social and emotional skills of his students. Craig is also a wizard on the decks and has a great following on the DJ scene.

I am jack turner an ex-pupil off Luke fletcher and Criag watt, I attended their previous school heritage park for ten years during this time I feel that Luke and craig helped me massively to be the person I am today not only did they help me education wise but I also learnt a lot of personal skills from a wide range of subjects they taught. I achieved an amauter boxing license from boxing sessions that we attended as a school I also achieved two awards from the duke of Edinburgh I also achieved a level one in btec sport in school that lead me on to a higher level through collage. I experienced many different things through the help of Luke and craig. Luke and craig are very laid back people who have a lot off time for the people who show respect there have a very good way off teaching that makes show all students understand what as been said and are always willing to help the people who need that little bit off extra support.
